Here
and Now |
| You start by listening
to the wisdom—and the concerns—of the people who know it best:
the villagers whose daily lives depend upon its health. They are as integral
to the jungle ecosystem as jaguars, spider monkeys and aguaje palms. Next,
you roll up your sleeves and dig in for the long haul because there are
no quick fixes in conservation. It is a continual effort to find ways of
sustainable co-existence so that all may prosper.
Perhaps nowhere are the stakes higher than in
the tropical rainforest, which is home to the greatest diversity of species
found anywhere on Earth. Yet scientists predict that within 40 years,
our planet’s "Edens" could be lost forever, victims of
rapacious logging, unsustainable agriculture, chemical poisoning and degraded
watersheds. What has taken millions of years to evolve could be completely
destroyed in mere decades. The effects would be far ranging and irreversible—from
shifts in global climate to the loss of medicinal plants, gone extinct
before scientists could discover them (some 25% of western pharmaceuticals
are extracted or derived from rainforest organisms). The losses, however,
would go far beyond those with a direct impact on mankind. The extinction
of literally millions of species is at risk. And since future generations
won’t be able to save what isn’t there, it is up to us, here
and now, to do something. |
