Did You Know?...
2.5% of the world's water is fresh and only a fraction
is currently accessible. Of that, 50% comes from the rainforest regions
of the world.
The deforestation rate by burning the rainforests
for cropland and unregulated timber usage has destroyed more than 15%
of the Amazon in only 30 years.
This destruction of the world's rainforests has caused
the worst extinction rate since the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million
years ago.
Every single minute the world's tropical rainforests
are reduced in size by one football field through development or slash
and burn crop production.
In 2001, Costa Rica (a West Virginia sized country)
attracted 1.2 million visitors to its tropical rainforest parks.
The numbers of eco-visitors to Costa Rica's tropical
rainforests is expected to grow to 1.9 million within a few years.
Twelve percent of Costa Rica's existing tropical rainforests
are now in national parks.
The amount of tropical rainforest in private preserves
is 16% of the remaining rain forest in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica has the most tropical rainforest set aside
of any Central American nation, a whopping 28% in both private and national
